Incident

Patrolman Catchings was shot and killed by a carjacking suspect while returning home from a motorcycle training course. Patrolman Catchings was in uniform and on his department motorcycle when he was flagged down by a citizen who had just been carjacked. Patrolman Catchings called for back-up and pursued the suspect. After a short pursuit, the suspect crashed the stolen car. The 18-year-old driver crawled out of the vehicle and opened fire on Patrolman Catchings striking him several times in the chest. Patrolman Catchings returned fire and killed the suspect before succumbing to his injuries.
