Incident

Police Officer Gilbert Taisacan was shot and killed in Tinian by an off-duty canine officer who had been arrested earlier for assault and battery. When Officer Taisacan and his partner attempted to arrest the subject, he fired at both officers, mortally wounding Officer Taisacan. His partner recovered from his gunshot wounds to the stomach. The suspect committed suicide before being apprehended. Officer Taisacan had served with the Northern Mariana Islands Department of Public Safety - Police Division for eight years and was named the Police Officer of the Year in 1995.
