Incident
Detective Sergeant Bayer succumbed to injuries he sustained when he attempted to stop a disturbance at a local bar/dance hall at Bagley and Hubbard streets. Detective Bayer, who was on the department's Pick-Pocket Squad, was beaten and suffered strikes to the neck and chest while trying to stop a fight that began between a father and son and soon spread. It is believed Detective Bayer suffered a heart attack during his attempts to stop the disturbance. He died en route to the hospital. Detective Bayer served with the Detroit Police Department for 15 years.
