Incident

Police Officer LaToya Johnson was shot and killed as she and her partner served commitment papers at a home at 934 North Broad Street.

She and her partner were assigned to serve commitment papers on a male whose family said he was in need of psychiatric evaluation. When the officers arrived, the male confronted them with a gun. The man opened fire on the officers and struck Officer Johnson. After Officer Johnson fell, the man stood over her and fired several more shots.

Officer Johnson's partner called for backup and responding officers exchanged gunfire with the man, eventually killing him.

Officer Johnson had served with the New Orleans Police Department for three years.

I was thinking of you tonight. I can never forget that night. I was last to the ramp at Charity. It still took the ambulance almost 3-4 minutes to get to the ramp after that Code 5. Waiting for the medics to open the doors and take you into the ER was an eternity which equaled maybe 2-3 minutes. I’d seen too much death so I knew you were down permanently. Damn security wouldn’t even let us go in. I saw your face when they finally took you out and I immediately knew 10-7. I walked maybe 2 feet until my legs gave out. Until this day I can’t stop the tears on that anniversary. I remember your little girl also. She’s a grown woman now and I’m sure she learned to cope somehow. You were electricity. That smile and your charm was golden. Rest well my friend. I’m sorry I couldn’t get there fast enough. Smile on us from heaven because we really need that electricity in these times. “Brooklyn!!!!!”
