Incident
Officher Thomas E. Tighe of the 24th Precinct was fatally shot at 2:35 a.m. while making an arrest at Hastings and Leavitt Streets. While on patrol, Officer Tighe located a known offender. While making the arrest, Officer Tighe was shot and critically wounded by one of the offender's friends. One month later, Officer Tighe died as a result of the injuries he sustained. On July 15, 1911, Patrolman Tighe's 22-year-old killer was sentenced to 30 years in the Joliet Penitentiary. On August 17, 1924, he stole a guards car and escaped. He was captured in Chicago on November 30, 1929, and returned to Joliet Penitentiary. He was released on February 2, 1933. He was killed on September 30, 1949, when he was hit by a car while walking on a local street in Evansville, Indiana.
