Incident

Patrolman Patrick Madden was shot and killed and his partner was seriously wounded as they arrested a man who had been shooting his gun in the roadway on Walton Street. They located the man near the intersection of Walton Street and Hold Street (modern-day Greenview Avenue) and placed him under arrest. The man suddenly produced a pistol and shot both officers. The 24-year-old suspect was apprehended, convicted of murder, and sentenced to 99 years. He was denied clemency in 1953.
