Incident

Patrolman Edward Barrett was shot and killed when he responded to a burglary on N.E. Perry Avenue in which several diamonds were stolen. He was searching the neighborhood with several other officers when he encountered a suspect in the alley behind 711 Glendale Street. The suspect opened fire on Patrolman Barrett, striking him in the head once. Patrolman Barrett was transported to St. Francis Hospital, where he died two hours later. A suspect was charged with Patrolman Barrett's murder but was acquitted at his trial on February 28th, 1908.

Patrolman Barrett was survived by his wife and daughter.
