Incident

Deputy Sheriff Verner Yarborough was shot in the abdomen and mortally wounded by a whiskey runner whom he and two fellow officers apprehended at the corner of North Avenue and Peachtree Street in Atlanta.

The deputies had surprised the suspect along with two other men as they were removing large quantities of liquor from one automobile and placing it in another. The suspect suddenly bolted from the deputies, shot Deputy Yarborough in the abdomen, and fled from the scene as the other two deputies returned fire.

Deputy Yarborough died at Grady Hospital the next day. The suspect's two accomplices were arrested at the scene.

Deputy Yarborough was survived by his wife and two sons, two brothers, and two sisters.
