Incident

Trooper Tony Lumley died as a result of injuries sustained the previous night when his patrol car collided with a vehicle being pursued by other law enforcement agencies.

The pursuit started in Clayton County, and proceeded through Henry County into Spalding County, where Trooper Lumley joined in. The pursuit ended when the suspect's vehicle crashed into Trooper Lumley's vehicle on Georgia 16. The suspect was taken into custody and transported to a local hospital with minor injuries.

Trooper Lumley was flown to Grady Memorial Hospital where he succumbed to his injuries the following morning.

The suspect pleaded guilty to armed robbery, carjacking, and murder in connection with Trooper Lumley's death. He was sentenced to life in prison, but will be eligible for parole.

Trooper Lumley had served with the Georgia State Patrol for 2.5 years, and was assigned to the Griffin Post.

In 2009 the Georgia Legislature renamed Georgia Highway 18, in Pike County, after Tony Lumley in honor of his service.

Survivors

He is survived by his wife, two daughters, parents, and brother.
