Incident

Deputy Sheriff William Elliott was killed in a vehicle crash in the 1200 block of Troupe Street while responding to a rape call.

Another car ran a stop sign as the patrol car approached the intersection of Richmond Avenue and Troupe Street. The driver of the patrol car attempted to avoid a collision and skidded into a tree in the front yard of 1229 Troupe Street. Deputy Elliott was ejected from the vehicle and suffered fatal injuries.

Deputy Elliott had served with the Richmond County Sheriff's Office for 18 years and had previously served with the Augusta Fire Department and Fort Gordon Fire Department.

Survivors

He was survived by his wife, son, four daughters, four grandchildren, and three sisters.
