Incident

Acting Night Marshal Jeff Jones was shot and killed when he responded to Crabb's Saloon after receiving reports of a disturbance during which someone fired a gun inside shortly before midnight. He was shot twice by a man with a pistol at the scene. He was taken to a nearby home and attended by a doctor but died the following day. The son of a prominent judge was arrested but quickly exonerated by a coroner's jury.

Survivors

Acting Marshal Jones was survived by his wife and two small children.
