Incident
Deputy Sheriff Stuart Holt suffered a fatal heart attack after working for eight continuous days with extra duty assignments and overtime hours.
On May 29, Deputy Holt was the first responder at the scene of a structure fire and attempted to enter the structure to rescue any possible occupants trapped inside. The next day, he worked an additional three hours of overtime after his 12-hour shift. On May 31, after finishing his 12-hour day, he stopped to render aid at a traffic scene where a vehicle plunged into the Boulder Creek River, ultimately killing a teenage passenger. While driving away from the scene, two hours later, he experienced chest pains. The next couple of days, he worked extra duty traffic control and security for a triathlon and an overtime assignment transporting inmates charged with felonies to the courthouse and providing security during a hearing that lasted five hours without a break. On June 2, when he went home, he passed out and was unable to be resuscitated.
Deputy Holt was a United States Army veteran and served with the Boulder County Sheriff's Office for 19 years.
