Jeffrey Vaughn Mitchell
Incident
Deputy Sheriff Jeffrey Mitchell was shot and killed while conducting a traffic stop in the rural area of Dillard Road and Meiss Road at approximately 3:30 am.
After contacting dispatchers and telling them he was conducting a vehicle stop, Deputy Mitchell was not heard from again. A backup deputy was sent to the scene to check on him and he was found shot once in the head by his own service weapon. It was determined he had been shot during a violent struggle.
The subject who shot him remains at large.
Deputy Mitchell had served with the Sacramento County Sheriff's Department for nine years.
Survivors
He is survived by his wife and 6-year-old son.
