Incident

Officer Manny Lopez was responding to a burglary call when his patrol car collided with a train around 1:30 a.m. at the North Mary Crossing in Sunnyvale. He was transported to Stanford University Hospital, where he was pronounced deceased. The alarm he was responding to had been accidentally triggered by a janitor. Officer Lopez had served with the Sunnyvale Department of Public Safety for over three years and previously served with the Santa Clara County Sheriff's Office.

Survivors

Survivors include his wife, who also served in law enforcement, and his parents.
