Incident
Deputy Louis Wallace was shot and killed after he and his partner stopped a suspicious person in a stolen vehicle near 713 S. Long Beach Boulevard in Compton. As they were patting the suspect down over the hood of their cruiser the man suddenly produced a .32 caliber handgun from the crotch area of his pants and opened fire, striking Deputy Wallace, and striking his partner in the knee. Despite being mortally wounded, Deputy Wallace was able to return fire and kill the suspect. He told responding deputies to transport his wounded partner to the hospital first. Deputy Wallace died while en route to the hospital. Deputy Wallace had served with the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department for five years.
