Incident

Deputy Sheriff Kent Hintergardt was shot and killed when he responded to a domestic disturbance. He had responded to an apartment complex and was waiting in the parking lot for backup when the suspect came downstairs and began speaking to him. Unbeknownst to Deputy Hintergardt, the man had just strangled his girlfriend to death in her apartment. During their encounter, the man produced a handgun and fatally shot Deputy Hintergardt. The man committed suicide a short time later. Deputy Hintergardt had served with the Riverside County Sheriff's Department for four years.

Survivors

He was survived by his expectant wife and 16-month-old daughter.
