Incident

Policemen Lee Clark and Edward Nix were shot and killed in a gun battle with an 18 year-old youth and his father, both alleged bootleggers.

Earlier, Policeman Clark and Nix fired at a car the youth was driving when he refused their order to pull over. Later that day, gunfire erupted as the boy and his father confronted the officers on a local street corner. The father, his son, and Policeman Clark were killed. Two bystanders were wounded. Policeman Nix, mortally wounded, died en route to the hospital.
