Shot dead during a gun battle when he and his colleague, Auxiliary Constable Ronald McCauley, were ambushed by several terrorists as they checked a suspicious car in County Antrim. His colleague was fatally wounded and died on 25th March. Both men were posthumously awarded the Queen’s Police Medal for Gallantry.
