Just after 11pm Reserve Constable Shaw was driving out of Ballynahinch RUC Station after his colleague opened the gates. Terrorist gunmen laying in wait in the church grounds directly opposite opened fire, hitting both police officers. Reserve Constable Shaw died from his injuries.

Survived by his family including three adult children.
