Incident
Around lunchtime a joint police and military patrol, of which Constable Reid was one of two RUC officers, was on foot on the outskirts of Crossmaglen. The patrol emerged from a field intending to set up a vehicle checkpoint on the Castleblaney Road when a single shot rang out. Constable Reid was hit in the chest, the round piercing his flak jacket causing fatal injuries.
In June 1984 he began serving in Londonderry until October 1990 when he moved to Newry, a month later moving to Crossmaglen where he remained station for the remainder of his RUC service. Before joining the RUC he served as a Part Time member of the Ulster Defence Regiment.
He was survived by his parents and two brothers.
