Incident
PC McIntyre was fatally injured as he and a colleague responded to an early morning report of an iron bar lying across two lanes of the Mersey Tunnel.
Having already brought the traffic to a halt, Derek left his vehicle to remove the object but, as he did so, a 22-ton lorry and trailer with defective brakes failed to stop and struck a private car and the police Land Rover before hitting the officer and dragging him 120 feet.
