DC Smith died at the scene on the A1033 at the junction with the B1240, Thorn Road, near the village of Thorngumbald, East Yorkshire.

The Chair of Humberside Police Federation said “She had, for sixteen years, worked tirelessly for the communities of Humberside both as an investigating officer, PCSO and then, from 2015, as an officer”.

“Karen was a well-liked and popular colleague and was recognised by all who knew and worked with her as being tremendously hard-working and dedicated. She showed an incredible level of compassion for victims of crime and tirelessly pursued justice for them. These attributes made her a truly outstanding detective”.
