Chief Inspector John Smith was killed when, during a storm, a tree fell onto and crushed his car as he drove along Morestead Road while on his way to report for duty in Winchester.
Joh had only recently taken over as the Deputy Commander of the Winchester Sub-Division.
He was survived by his wife and five adult children.
