Incident

In the winter of 1941-42, during the German occupation of Guernsey, PC Smith was one of sixteen police officers deported to prisons and labour camps in Europe for stealing food from the occupying army to help prevent civilians from going hungry.

Having been beaten and deprived of food and clothes when it was terribly cold PC Smith died in Augsburg Prison, Germany.

Herbert was born in Neath, South Wales, on 15th February 1904 and was deported on 13th June 1942, at which time he resided in Rue Flere, Vale, Guernsey.
