Incident
Inspector Taylor collapsed and died while on duty in Dursley Police Station, probably as a result of a brain haemorrhage.
He had received numerous commendations throughout his police career, including a police silver braid for conspicuous gallantry and a medal from The Society of Protection of Life from Fire, for his part in the rescue of six of the seven occupants trapped by fire in Duncan Cottage, Victoria Street, Coleford, on 22nd October 1939.
He captained Lydney Rugby Team and played for Gloucestershire County. He also represented both Cheltenham Police Rugby Team and the British Police Rugby Union Team.
Prior to joining Gloucestershire Constabulary, Fitzroy served in the Royal Marines and was on board HMS Marlborough when, in April 1919, it arrived in Yalta, on the Crimean Peninsular, to evacuate members of the Russian Imperial Family to safety in Malta.
Approximately two hundred police officers attended Inspector Taylor’s funeral, held at Blakeney.
