Incident
During a fierce gale, Inspector Nash was helping to launch the town’s lifeboat, to assist a stricken vessel, when a gust of wind caused the boat to pitch and he was crushed by the carriage.
Alfred joined the force in 1868 and rose through the ranks becoming First Class Constable, then Sergeant and then Inspector, the senior member of the Dover Police Force. He served the force for thirty-five years before his untimely death.
He was never merely content to simply do his duty, but always wanted to help anyone in any way he could and, in an effort to save the lives of others, he lost his own.
Alfred was born in Guston, Kent, in 1847, to parents William and Sarah. In December 1870 he married Jane Fagg and they had six children. The 1881, 1891 and 1901 censuses all show Alfred and his family living in Wood Street, Dover.
The 1881 Census shows Alfred as a Police Constable while the 1891 Census shows him as a Police Sergeant and the 1901 Census shows him as a Police Inspector.
