Incident

Son of Darrell and Shirley Coates. C/Supt. Coates was from British Columbia. He died as a result of a massive earthquake on January 16, 2010, while on mission in Haiti. He was the recipient of a Canadian peacekeeping service medal, a Queen’s Golden Jubilee medal, a 30- year silver clasp and the police exemplary service medal. He also received a medal for his UN mission to Haiti. C/Supt. Coates held a Masters of Arts in Management and Policy, as well as a Bachelor of Social Sciences in Criminology. He was an avid mountain climber and ski racer. At the time of his death, he was the Acting Commissioner of Operations for the United Nations Stabilization Mission in Haiti. C/Supt. Coates was married to Lise and they had 3 children: Julie, Mathieu, and Luc. He is buried in Beechwood Cemetery in Ottawa.
