Incident
On Thursday May 11, 2023 at approximately 2:00 AM Russell County Ontario Provincial Police Sgt. Eric Mueller, along with two other officers, were dispatched to a disturbance at a home on Laval Street, in the municipality of Clarence-Rockland (approximately 50 KM east of downtown Ottawa), when someone reported hearing a gunshot. The officers arrived at the residence when the subject ambushed them with a ‘long gun’, injuring all three. Tragically, 42-year-old Sgt. Mueller died at hospital. One of the injured officers was released from hospital later that day while the third remains in hospital in critical but stable condition. Other officers responding to the call were able to arrest the subject who has since been charged with one count of first-degree murder in the death of Sgt. Mueller, and two counts of attempted murder. Sgt. Mueller started his career with the OPP 21 years ago as a Special Constable and eventually joined the OPP as a Constable in 2006. He was promoted to Sergeant in 2018. Sgt. Eric Mueller was a husband and father of two young children. Our condolences go out to his wife and children, family, friends and colleagues. We will remember him. As we start 2026, we can look back and note that we have been very fortunate to not have lost anyone in Canada to a Line of Duty Death (LODD) these last two years.
