Incident

At approximately 6:30 p.m., on November 14, 2010, Constable Sébastien Coghlan-Goyette, age 25, and student ride-a-long Sophia Rigas, age 22, were killed in a motor vehicle accident in Les Cèdres, Quebec, which is about 50 kilometres southwest of Montreal. Constable Coghlan-Goyette was responding to an emergency call on Route 340 when he tried to avoid a collision with a deer that was standing in the middle of the road. In trying to avoid the deer the PC did several rolls and ended up on a tree at the side of the road. Both Constable Sébastien Coghlan-Goyette and Sophia Rigas were taken to a hospital where they later died. Constable Sébastien Coghlan-Goyette, originally from St-Jean-sur-Richelieu QC, had been a officer with the Sûreté du Québec for 3 1/2 years. Our condolences go out to his partner, Francis Blais, his family, friends, and colleagues. As we start 2026, we can look back and note that we have been very fortunate to not have lost anyone in Canada to a Line of Duty Death (LODD) these last two years.
