Incident
On Monday March 27, 2023 at approximately 8:30 PM in Louiseville, west of Trois-Rivieres, Quebec Provincial Police Sgt. Maureen Breau and her colleague were trying to arrest a 35-year-old man accused of uttering threats near Saint-Aime Street and Saint-Laurent Avenue. While the officers were reading the suspect his rights, the man reportedly picked up a blade, possibly a sword, and struck Sgt. Breau in the neck. She then fell off the second-floor balcony. Her partner was also injured in the altercation but is expected to survive. One of two backup officers shot and killed the suspect. Sgt. Breau died from her wounds. Sgt. Maureen Breau was in her early 40’s and was a member of the Quebec Provincial Police for over 20 years. She was assigned to the post of the Municipalité Régionale de Comté de Maskinongé. Most of Sgt. Breau’s time was spent on patrol or supervising patrol teams. Sgt. Breau was working an overtime shift when she was stabbed. She was four days away from starting a new job as an Investigator. Her partner was also a Provincial Police Officer. She was also a mother of two children. Our condolences go out to Sgt. Maureen Breau’s family, friends and colleagues. She will be remembered. As we start 2026, we can look back and note that we have been very fortunate to not have lost anyone in Canada to a Line of Duty Death (LODD) these last two years.
