Retired K9 Cort lost his battle with cancer on Monday, April 20, 2026.

Cort joined the Fairfield Police Department in early 2015 and served alongside Sgt. Pena. K9 Cort was presented with a Purple Heart during the Fairfield Police Department's annual Awards and Employee Recognition Ceremony on April 19, 2023. Despite his injuries during a prior incident, Cort maintained his grasp of the criminal, preventing him from attacking searching police officers.

Reaching a well-deserved retirement, Cort spent most of his time relaxing poolside and socializing with his companion Riley and Officer Pena's wife and three children. Tuesday's Fairfield City Council meeting was closed in his honor.
