K9 Leonidas succumbed to heatstroke after the patrol vehicle's alarm system failed to operate.

K9 Leonidas was left in the patrol vehicle during a call where K9 Leonidas was not required. When his handler returned to the patrol vehicle, the air conditioning unit had failed, and the alarm had not activated. K9 Leonidas was transported to a local veterinarian, and despite life-saving measures, he passed away.

K9 Leonidas had served with the Schenectady County Sheriff's Office for eight years.

I am writing to express my sincere condolences regarding the passing of K9 Leonidas, a valued and courageous member of your department. This loss undoubtedly presents significant challenges for K9 Leonidas’s handler, your officers, and all those who had the opportunity to work alongside such an exceptional partner.
