Incident

On the evening of Wednesday, April 1, 2026, at approximately 7:45 p.m., Floki was shot while patrolling the secured strip of land between the two perimeter fences at the Marshall County Correctional Facility in Holly Springs, Mississippi. He was working alone, doing what he did every night — keeping contraband out of the prison.

Floki was not found until the following morning, Thursday, April 2, when K-9 Commander Josh Russell arrived to bring him in for food and water. Floki was gone.

A 7-year-old Dutch Shepherd, Floki was a multipurpose K-9 trained for narcotics detection, tracking, and general assignments. He served the Mississippi Department of Corrections with distinction, standing watch over one of the most dangerous and thankless posts in law enforcement — the prison perimeter, alone, in the dark.

The Mississippi Bureau of Investigation, the Holly Springs Police Department, and the facility's Corrections Investigation Division are jointly investigating the shooting. Mississippi Department of Corrections Commissioner Burl Cain personally offered a $1,000 reward for information leading to the arrest and conviction of those responsible.
