Incident
Corporal Bill Illingworth succumbed to injuries sustained on September 8th, 1983, when he was involved in a vehicle crash while responding to an armed robbery call. He was driving southbound on Airport Boulevard, near I-26, when a tractor-trailer pulled into the roadway while attempting to make a left turn. The patrol car went underneath of the trailer before striking a utility pole. Corporal Illingworth remained in a coma from the time of the crash until passing away seven years later on February 28th, 1991. Corporal Illingworth was a U.S. Navy veteran of the Vietnam War and had served with the Cayce Department of Public Safety for 13 years.

He was survived by his two children.
