Policeman Verne Brindley was shot and killed by a drunk driver while on a vice detail near the intersection of Adams Street and Central Avenue. Policeman Brindley was in his patrol car with the suspect when he suddenly grabbed his service revolver, shot him, and a fellow officer in the knee. Another officer and his prisoner subdued the suspect. The 29-year-old suspect was convicted of manslaughter and sentenced to a indeterminate term in prison. On May 4th, 1931, he died in the San Quentin Prison hospital after he stabbed himself in the chest.
