Incident

The driver of the van was apprehended five days later. He was convicted of first-degree murder and was sentenced to 50 years in prison.

Inspector McCaghren was a U.S. Army veteran of the Vietnam War and had served with the United States Customs Service for two years.

The Timothy C. McCaghren Customs Administration Building at the Ysleta Port of Entry in El Paso was named in his memory.

He was survived by his wife, daughter, son, and parents.
