Incident

Patrolman Sherman Nowlin was killed when his patrol car was struck by a train at the East First Street railroad crossing while he and his partner chased a stolen car. His partner survived the crash. Patrolman Nowlin was a United States Navy WWII veteran and had served with the Dayton Police Department for only 11 days.

He was survived by his wife and infant son.
