Incident
Trooper Sergio Romero was killed in a vehicle crash on U.S. Highway 287 near Childress, Texas.
Around 4:00 p.m., Trooper Romero was attempting to pull over a vehicle when a tractor-trailer pulled out in front of his patrol vehicle. He died at the scene.
Trooper Romero had served with the Texas Department of Public Safety - Texas Highway Patrol for nine months and previously served with the Hall County Sheriff's Office.
Sergio grew up in Estelline and graduated from Childress High School in 2017. He earned a criminal justice degree from West Texas A&M University in May 2021 and completed the police academy at College Station that December. He served roughly three years split between the Memphis Police Department and the Hall County Sheriff's Office, and volunteered with the Memphis Fire Department, before entering the Texas DPS academy in the summer of 2025 with Class B-2025.
He married in October 2022. He and his wife had two sons, Julian and Elias. He rode horses with his father and coached his older son's T-ball team. He followed Alabama football, the Baltimore Ravens and the United States men's national team.
He had nine months on the job. He was the 244th Texas Department of Public Safety officer to die in the line of duty since 1823.
