Incident

Constable Caskey died from his wounds after being shot while on foot patrol with a female officer in Londonderry’s Diamond Area, when a gunman opened fire on them from a hijacked van that pulled up alongside them.

The female officer was hit in the back and leg. At the inquest in February 1983, she stated that as the cab window opened she thought the van driver was looking for directions but then the side door opened and she saw a hooded gunman in the crouching position.

She shouted to Constable Caskey and then turned to look for cover when she heard three or four shots and felt extreme pressure in her back and a burning sensation in her right calf.
