Incident

Police Officer Robert Fumiatti succumbed to a gunshot wound sustained five years earlier at the intersection of Washington Avenue and West Street.

He was attempting to conduct a subject stop a convicted felon during a drug investigation when he was shot in the face. He was resuscitated at the scene but continued to suffer health issues until passing away from complications on January 10th, 2007.

The man who shot him was sentenced to 45 years in prison.

Officer Fumiatti had served with the New Haven Police Department for six years and was assigned to the Street Interdiction Unit.

On June 13, 2002, Patrol Officer Robert Fumiatti was gravely wounded in the line of duty during a drug investigation. Robert passed away on January 10, 2007, as a result of his injuries. Robert was a six-year veteran of the New Haven Police Department, but more than that, he was an outstanding officer, a trusted colleague, and a dear friend.

Robert embodied the very best of our profession. He served with integrity, compassion, and an unwavering commitment to protecting the people of New Haven. His bravery and dedication were evident every day he put on the uniform, and his sacrifice reminds us of the risks our officers take to keep our communities safe.

As Chief of Police at the time of his passing, I had the honor of working alongside Robert and witnessing firsthand the impact he had on those around him. His professionalism, his kindness, and his friendship left a mark that will never fade.

We will never forget Robert. His memory lives on in the department he served so faithfully, in the community he protected, and in the hearts of all who knew him. Today and always, we honor his service, his sacrifice, and his life. Rest in peace, Robert. You are missed dearly, and you will never be forgotten.
