Officer McCoy was a U.S. Navy veteran and had served with the Customs and Border Protection - Office of Field of Operations and the former Immigration and Naturalization Service for 23 years. He was assigned to the Fort Lauderdale/Port Everglades Port of Entry.

Corrections officers were hit hardest. Confined facilities and large populations meant constant, close, unavoidable exposure.
