Incident
Special Officer Raymond Shacklock was shot and killed in the Bruce's Park area of Norfolk County while chasing a suspect during a raid on an illegal still.
He and two other officers had arrested a suspect while raiding the still near the north end of Godfrey Avenue at about 4:30 pm. As they began to destroy the still a second suspect hiding in the bushes nearby began to run from the scene. Officer Shacklock and one of the officers began to pursue the subject through the brush, and the second officer fell behind.
Two shots were heard several minutes later and Officer Shacklock's partners believed he had shot at the suspect. They began to search for him about an hour later when he failed to return to the scene. They encountered two residents who informed them they had located Officer Shacklock's body in a nearby field and took them to the scene.
The subject was arrested in October 1921 in Hallwood, Virginia, and returned to Norfolk County for trial. During his trial, he claimed that Officer Shacklock tripped and accidentally shot himself. The man was convicted of first-degree murder and sentenced to life in prison.
Officer Shacklock had served with the Norfolk County Police Department for approximately three months. He had submitted his resignation earlier in the week at the request of his wife and was murdered on his last day with the agency.
