DS Smyth died in Mater Misericordiae Hospital, Dublin, nearly six weeks after being shot by five gunmen as he walked to his home in Millmount Avenue, Drumcondra, between 10:30pm and 11:30pm on the evening of 30th July. He had previously received personal visits and written warnings to “lay off” Republicans, but had continued to pursue them.
