Biography

Michael Isles was sworn in as a Constable on August 9, 1974 and served the Queensland Police for over 35 years, spending his career predominantly in rural and regional Queensland — at Woolloongabba, Warwick, Allora, Cloncurry, and finally as Officer in Charge of Ayr station from 1999. He chose regional service deliberately; he wanted to be a name and not a number to his community. He received two Commissioner's Commendations, the Queensland Police Service Medal with third clasp, and a Mayor's Lantern Award from the Mayor of Mount Isa for his hands-on work raising funds and constructing the Cloncurry youth club. In 2008 he was wrongly targeted in a corruption inquiry involving drug trafficking and fraudulent driver's licences — an experience that shattered a proud man. Simultaneously diagnosed with cancer, he fought both battles and was cleared of all wrongdoing. He had overcome his illness and returned to work on September 21, 2009. On September 23 — his third day back — Senior Sergeant Michael Isles left home at 7:30am in his police vehicle and was never seen again. His body was never recovered. He was 58 years old.
