Incident

Deputy Sheriff Listash Browder was slain after being stabbed and shot with his own service weapon.

He and other deputies had raided a nightclub the previous night but one of the suspects had evaded capture. He was attempting to arrest that suspect but the man stabbed him in the chest during the arrest. The man then gained control of Deputy Browder's service weapon and shot him twice, killing him.

The suspect fled the scene but turned himself in later that day. On March 12th, 1958, the man was convicted of second degree murder.

Deputy Browder was a U.S. Army veteran and had served with the Jefferson County Sheriff's Office for 30 years.

Tributes

I served 1985 to 1993. You served too, before the badge - different uniform, same idea. You go where you are sent and you do not get to pick the call.
Deputy Sheriff Browder gave the Jefferson County Sheriff's Office 30 years.
Thank you for your service to the Pine Bluff community, and for your service before it. Gone but never to be forgotten.
Rest easy, brother.
