Incident
Officer Leonard Winney was killed in a motorcycle collision while pursuing a speeding motorist on the Santa Ana Canyon at Imperial Highway in Anaheim. Officer Winney was traveling west on Santa Ana Canyon Road when a gravel truck turned left in front of Officer Winney. He was unable to stop his motorcycle and crashed into the truck. The driver was acquitted of misdemeanor manslaughter. Officer Winney was a United States Navy Korean War veteran and served with the California Highway Patrol for three years. He was survived by his wife, son, daughter, parents, two brothers, a half-brother, and six sisters. One of his brothers also served with the California Highway Patrol.
