Incident

Patrolman Laverne Haubert was killed in an automobile crash while transporting an injured woman and her husband to a hospital during snowfall. While traveling on U.S. Highway 69, the cruiser went out of control on the slippery highway and struck another vehicle head-on at Iowa Highway 160. All three occupants of the police vehicle were killed, as well as two occupants of the other vehicle. Patrolman Haubert was a United States Navy Reserve WWII veteran. He had served with the Ankeny Police Department for one year and previously served with the Des Moines Police Department for over five years.

Survivors

He was survived by his wife, two stepsons, and a sister.
