Detective Joseph Tardiff was shot and killed executing a search warrant as part of a narcotics investigation. He and two other officers were shot by a subject as they entered an apartment on St. Peter Street. Detective Tardiff had served with the New Orleans Police Department for five years.

He was survived by his wife and three children.
