Incident

Police Officer Johnny Annas was shot and killed with another officer's pistol while trying to breakup a street fight. While Officer Annas returned to patrol car to call for assistance his partner was assaulted by a mob of over 100 people and had his pistol stolen. As Officer Annas went to assist the officer the suspect who stole the pistol opened fire, striking Officer Annas. The suspect was arrested. The suspect was convicted of first degree murder and sentenced to life in prison December 20, 1962. He was released October 16, 1986. Officer Annas had served with the Charlotte Police Department for two years.
