Incident

Constable John Ferguson was shot and killed from ambush on the highway between Farmerville and Shiloh.

He was returning to Shiloh after going to Stein's Bluff to make collections when he was ambushed and shot in the head. His murder remained unsolved until November 1898 when three men were arrested. Two of the mean accepted plea deals and were sentenced to life in prison. The third subject was acquitted of murder.

Constable Ferguson was a Confederate Army veteran of the Civil War.

Survivors

He was survived by his wife, three children, and three siblings.
